How can setting guidelines against video thumbnails help drive media efficiencies?

Video thumbnails - the preview image on an unplayed video - is an integral part of a video advert that is often overlooked. With 30% of video ad impressions on Facebook not being automatically played, optimizing video thumbnail images can help you identify additional opportunities for branded moments, maximise branded impressions and ultimately save media spend on video advertising. Through adding guidelines for video thumbnails you can now:

  • Maximize branded impressions for video that don’t auto play by tracking if the thumbnail contains your brand or your product.
  • Identify additional opportunities for branded moments and media efficiencies across your global video spend
  • Establish creative best practices at the thumbnail level to further improve video performance

Am I able to analyze video thumbnails for my Pre-flight campaigns?

Currently, guidelines against thumbnail images are only tracked for your in-flight campaigns. That’s because the default thumbnail for a video is different than the thumbnail that Facebook sets for your video ad.

I've updated my video thumbnail but my score has not changed to reflect this update - why is that?

Currently, we capture the original thumbnail that you set for your ad. Any updates or changes made to the video thumbnail are not currently captured, but we’re working on this.

What Channels can I test on for Thumbnail based rules?

We capture thumbnails from both Facebook and Instagram, however, it's important to note that Stories based placements on both Channels are not applicable as they do not carry a thumbnail when viewed.
